7 Tips for Traveling with Fine Jewelry

Collect, manage, and organize your wedding guest information for each event and track their preferences.
Can't bear to travel without your most special pieces of jewelry? If you really must bring all your valuables along, consider these top tips for minimizing the risk of loss, damage, or theft when it comes to traveling with fine jewelry.

No. 1 - Choose wisely

Pack light and take only the jewelry that you’ll likely wear. Your grandma's four-carat diamond ring you save for special occasionsmaynot be appropriate to pack. Instead, choose versatile pieces that go with everything.

No. 2 - Take note

Make a list of all the jewelry that you’ll be taking with you and make two copies of the list. Take one copy with you and store it separately from your jewelry. Leave the other copy at home. (You may also want to take pictures or a video of your jewelry.)

No. 3 - Carry it on

Never put jewelry in checked baggage. Instead, wear it or stow it in your carry-on bag. If you wear it, take extra care by slipping a pendant inside a sweater or turning your ring so that only the band shows so you don't attract unwanted attention.

No. 4 - Keep it with you

Don’t leave your jewelry in an unattended car or suitcase. Put your jewelry in a small jewelry bag that you can tuck into your purse while exploring at your destination. When checking into your hotel or condo, do not hand your jewelry bag to hotel staff; instead, carry it personally.

No. 5 - Find a safe place, literally

If you can't wear all your jewelry or you're heading to the beach, store it in the in-room safe.

No. 6 - Consider a jewelry sitter

Your vacation is a great time to leave your best pieces with your jeweler for a professional cleaning, inspection, and re-evaluation. Your jewelry will be safe and sparkling like new when you return. (If you think your left hand will feel naked without your wedding ring, pick up a fun piece of costume jewelry to wear for the trip!)

No. 7 - Insure it

Insure your jewelry before leaving home and be sure your coverage is adequate. Have a recent appraisal or insurance evaluation in your home records. If you are leaving the country, confirm that your insurance policy covers you. Also make sure that your policy covers theft, accidental loss, and mysterious disappearance (or unexplained loss). Whether you’re a jet-setter or a road-tripper, Jewelers Mutual can help ensure that your mind is on your next adventure and not on worrying about your jewelry.
