The Secret Embroidery On This Groom’s Bow Tie Was the Best Surprise of All

When hockey brought Chris to Michigan at the young age of fifteen, meeting his future wife wasn’t exactly in the game plan. He was at a brand new school, where he was busy making new friends and logging hours on the ice, of course. But there’s always time for young love, right? Read on to find out how Chris and Kacy first crossed paths and how they triumphed over time and distance:

Chris spotted Kacy in the hallway of Saline High School, and she noticed him too (even if he refuses to believe so). After only a few brief encounters (and butterflies), Chris moved high schools, and that was the end of that…

They lost contact over the years, while Chris continued his education and hockey career at the University of Michigan and Kacy studied an hour north at Michigan State University. Now, they both view this distance as a blessing in disguise, because they lived and learned as individuals before their paths crossed again.

One fateful night in 2011, Chris took a huge leap of faith and reached out to the high school crush who was still on his mind. They rekindled their connection that fall, but it wasn’t long before Chris’s professional hockey career took him 900 miles away.

Presented with this new challenge, Chris and Kacy were forced to decide whether their new relationship was going to sink or swim. They both decided to give it a go, and they’re thankful for that decision every day.

Since the day these two met, they’ve overecome obstacles and poor timing, but despite different schools, cities, and states, nothing could truly keep them apart. They believe that their stars aligned at the right moment in time, and if not for that, they wouldn’t be able to spend forever making up for lost time.

The lovebirds’ wedding was full of sweet touches, but the bow tie—which was Chris’ way of incorporating his southern roots into their Michigan wedding—is our favorite. The embroidered message on the inside was a surprise from his mom—the title of their mother-son dance song.

Congratulations to the newly minted couple!
