Who else is in desperate need of some good old-fashioned escapism right now? Seriously, we’re all stuck inside with nothing to do but scroll through our phones! That does not sound healthy. Plus, we have great taste in movies at Loverly. So, if you want to keep your mind off the news, here are ten films that will have you giggling with glee and blissfully unaware of the outside world for at least an hour and a half.

1.  Bringing Up Baby (1938)

This movie will transport you to another time and place in the best way possible! Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant are two of the most famous actors of the silver screen for a reason. And this movie is that reason! Okay, well, they did a ton of other stuff too, but for our purposes, this is the only movie that matters right now. Bringing Up Baby is a classic mismatched romcom about an uptight (but gorgeous) man, Grant, who is engaged to the wrong woman; he stumbles upon his soulmate in the delightfully ditzy debutante played by Hepburn. Also, spoiler alert, the “baby” they’re bringing up…is not the kind of baby you think it is.

2. Some Like It Hot (1959)

Who could possibly top Marilyn Monroe? This woman is not only gorgeous but she has comedic timing down pat! Add Jack Lemon, Tony Curtis, and possibly one of the best last lines in the history of cinema and you have yourself a laugh riot with romance to boot. The film follows two men on the run from the mob who have to dress up as members of an all-women band to escape their bullet-ridden fate! But when sparks start to fly between one of the gentlemen and the irresistible lead singer (Monroe), things get…complicated.

3. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Is there anything better than a romcom about two people who think they hate each other but are actually perfect for each other? Or what about a romcom about two dear, long-time friends who realize they were actually perfect for each other the whole time? Well, why not both? When Harry Met Sally, source of the famous “I’ll have what she’s having,” is exactly that. This movie is a hilarious study on modern romance, friendships, and more! Plus it features the work of two romcom veterans: Nora Ephron and Meg Ryan.

4. Clueless (1995)

This classic matchmaker gone wrong romcom—based on Jane Austen's Emma—is about a girl who just cannot stop butting into other people’s lives. Clueless works as a romcom doing double time: exploring both romantic and platonic heartbreak while Cher gracefully blunders her way from high school hottie to do-gooder of the year. So, whether you’re stuck at home with your partner or your roommate, this works on every level!

5. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Can anyone else wear black underwear without not thinking about this movie? No? Just me… Okay, cool, moving on. Heath Ledger is at peak-heartthrob while wooing 90s queen Julia Stiles—first for money and then for true love. Also, back to the literary side of things, did I mention this is based on Shakespeare? So if you ever need to bluff your way through a summary of The Taming Of The Shrew, then this is your official Sparknotes! (Don’t quote me on that.)

6. Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Is there anything as relatable as Renée Zellweger drunkenly singing to herself in pajamas? We’ve all been there! Bridget Jones’s Diary is based on a book of the same name, which is based on another even more famous book: Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen (we meet again!) lowkey invented the perpetually single girl romcom as we know it, so it’s no wonder that her books are still leading to fun and fanciful adaptations to this day! Also…Hugh Grant and Collin Firth in one movie! Need I say more?

7. About Time (2013)

Okay, not gonna lie…this can be a bit of a tearjerker! Consider yourself warned. But sometimes it can be cathartic to cry, right? Right? About Time is a fantastical little love story about a man, played by Domhnall Gleeson who learns that he can travel through time, but, of course, it doesn’t exactly always work out in his favor. Enter: Rachel McAdams being ridiculously cute and absolutely impossible to resist! What's a time-traveling guy supposed to do when he falls head over heels?

8. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

If you haven’t already seen this movie, where have you been? This was one of the breakout films of 2018, and not just because of its diverse (and stunningly gorgeous) cast. This movie is sweet, funny, absolutely heart-melting, and will leave you seriously craving some Singaporean street food. When Rachel Chu accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend’s wedding back in Singapore, she gets the surprise of a lifetime…this guy is rich. Crazy rich. Now, if only she could figure out how to impress his mother.

9. Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Ali Wong is hilarious; this is simply a fact. But in this romcom opposite Randall Park, she absolutely shines with charm. Also, this movie gets bonus points for having such a capable and successful woman taking complete charge of her own romantic endeavors! She knows what she wants, and she goes for it with all she’s got. These childhood best friends may have lost touch for a long time, but when there’s chemistry, there’s chemistry. Even if Park’s character is kind of a fixer-upper to begin with.

10. The Long Shot (2019)

This movie is wildly underrated! But, first, let’s address one thing. How dare Charlize Theron be so incredibly capable, completely gorgeous, and (apparently) totally hilarious? Who let this woman have so many talents? It’s just not fair for the rest of us mere mortals! This movie is a hidden gem. Theron plays a seriously successful politician—the ridiculously smart and competent secretary of state to a bumbling (and somewhat familiar though less outwardly evil) presidential type. But when she meets the dork she used to babysit as a kid (Seth Rogen) and needs to spice up her speech writing with his help, well, let’s just say this is a mismatch gone very right.
