Flowers are one of the most important components of most couples' wedding days. Mainly because they're just so darn pretty… and because all that gorgeousness will cost you a pretty penny, too. To get you on-track with your floral vibe, and budget, here are 10 dos and don'ts to keep in mind when considering your wedding flowers.
Do be realistic about your budget.
That flower-strewn gorgeous wedding with roses and peonies and garlands draped here, there, and everywhere? The floral total for that affair may be your entire bottom line for your wedding. Before you set parameters about what you want—or "have to have"—flower-wise, make sure your vision, and expectations, match what you can spend.
Don’t choose out-of-season blooms, if you can help it.
One of the easiest ways to blow your budget is to be unaware of what's in season. If you have to have those aforementioned peonies, for instance, they are only technically in season in May and June—and you'll pay a premium to get them if your wedding is any other month of the year, if you're able to get them at all.
Do find inspiration online and from magazines.
To figure out what flowers you want, you're going to have to do some research. (Twist your arm, right?) Spend some time getting to know what flowers you like, what colors might look pretty in your venue, and whether you want traditional large arrangements, smaller grouped arrangements, garlands, or something else entirely for your wedding look. Don't copy a look just because it's blog-worthy. Focus on what you like and what's in-budget, not on what you think will look amazing in photos or make your frenemies jealous. This wedding is about reflecting both of your tastes and aesthetics—make it your own!
Do hire a professional whose style you love.
You want to enlist a florist who you totally trust to carry out your wedding flower vision. Make sure whoever you work with understands what you want and offers helpful suggestions, not complete overhauls or critiques of the look you say you want. Don't try to do your flowers yourself. Even if you love doing flowers for other people's weddings or have a tiny budget, it's not worth being up until midnight the night before your big day assembling arrangements and bouquets.
Do use flowers to decorate…everything!
DIY projects and details are great, but you can never go wrong with accenting with flowers. Use them to adorn your tables, your cake, your hair, you getaway car… okay, you get the idea. Don't forget flowers for the guys, especially the groom. Boutonnieres just look so dapper… and they can add a pop of color to any guys' attire. Do choose a color palette of two-to-three hues for your wedding—then focus your flowers around them. If you decide to go with pink and green, add texture with different types of blooms and depth to your palette by including flowers in pale pink, white with pink edges, and a brighter pink, along with some soft greens.
Don't worry if you decide not to preserve your bouquet.
The memory and photos of the big day will be plenty glorious. (Plus, you can use the money you'd spend to do this to boost your flower budget!)
