  • Apple Picking Taster

Apple Picking Taster - Ah, apple picking..... 60 degrees. Turtleneck sweater. Peeling vintage barn. Crackling leaf-covered grass. Red wagons, paper bags, large metal scales. And grove after grove of MacIntosh, Fuji, Gala, Macoun, Honey Crisp, Red Delicious and Winesap. Twist thrice and munch away. But don't fill up too much! Some apples have to make it home to simmer into softness with Morris Kitchen's spiced apple syrup, or roll in some melted apple cider caramels from Little Apple. And make sure to save room for all the apple-flavored goodies earned from a hard day's picking: apple-laced chocolate, taffy and marshmallows. Enjoy for yourself or send this taster in honor of our favorite kind of fall weekend. • Creamunchy Peanut Butter

    CB's Nuts

Creamunchy Peanut Butter - When it comes to PB, Mouth HQ is generally divided between Team Creamy and Team Crunchy. If we had to choose just one for a desert island (dessert island?), though, it’d be hard to decide. So when we opened a jar of this "Creamunchy," we set aside our differences (if only for the 5 minutes it took to polish off the jar). The texture is perfect for everyone – slightly grainy, spreadable, delicious. CB’s roasts its peanuts for a whole hour in flame-fired barrel roasters, for a flavor that doesn’t need added salt or oil. tip of the tongue This smooth yet crunchy variety is perfect for stirring into oatmeal or sandwiching between crackers.

  • Fulton Folderol 2008 Red Wine

    Old World Winery

Fulton Folderol 2008 Red Wine - The Fulton Folderol is a 50/50 combination of classic California zinfandel and Abouriou grapes, typically a French blending grape. The rich, jammy sweetness of the zin is balanced perfectly by earthy and tannic Abouriou. This was the first wine we tried from Old World Winery, and we just fell in love after one sip of its rich complexity. Old World makes wines that not only taste great, but also taste true to their vineyards. They never add yeast because they think the native yeast better expresses a wine’s origins. We also think the name's pretty clever, because this wine is anything but trivial (thanks, Google). tip of the tongue This is the perfect wine to pair with steak. We also think it makes a great gift for dinner parties, weekend hosts and thoughtful neighbors. ingredients 50% zinfandel and 50% abouriou grapes; 12.8% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon

    Georgetown Trading

James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon - This historically-inspired bourbon is aged for a minimum of four years and has a nice amount of rye mixed in with corn in the mash to add some spice and balance out the sweetness. We were sold on the taste alone, but this bottle also has a really interesting back story... The original James E. Pepper whiskeys are the oldest and most legendary whiskeys in the country! Established in 1776 (date sound familiar, American History buffs?), Pepper whiskeys were distilled throughout three generations, until production ceased in the 1950s. Georgetown Trading has brought back the fabled brand, and they did it justice, collecting and sampling bottles from throughout the Pepper history, from pre-, mid- and post-Prohibition production. They even acquired a "top secret" letter from Mr. Pepper himself, detailing his family recipe. Then they went in search of whiskeys that lived up to this tradition. tip of the tongue As bourbon has grown in popularity, several legendary brands have been reincarnated to celebrate the history of America’s contribution to the world of whiskey. It's history you can taste, so sip this one neat. ingredients 50% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • OYO Whiskey

    Middle West Spirits

OYO Whiskey - Ah, the Midwest and its “amber waves of grain. Well, we think there’s no better celebration of said waves than this amber whiskey! OYO is made from 100% Ohio soft red winter wheat and bottled from a single cask, so it's a truly concentrated taste of Ohio terroir. Wheat whiskeys are dryer and lighter-bodied than bourbon, and OYO has a soft warmth and the mellow flavor of wheat bread with a hint of sweetness underneath. It's livened up by hints of dried fruit and spiced nuts. Tip of the tongue When it's cold, make a hot toddy with a squeeze of lemon, hot water and honey. When it's hot, make a whiskey version of a Bee's Knees: Combine 1 1/2 oz whiskey, 1 teaspoon honey and 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice in a shaker with plenty of ice. Shake until cold and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. did you know? Wheat whiskeys must be made with at least 51% wheat, but there are only a handful made exclusively from wheat. ingredients Distilled from 100% Ohio soft red winter wheat; 46% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Liqueur de Violettes

    Tempus Fugit Spirits

Liqueur de Violettes - Violet liqueur is a must-have ingredient for any fan of classic cocktails. (America lacked a decent one for decades, so we could only imagine the original flavor of an Aviation or Blue Moon*!) Now, there are some great options on the market, including this absolute stunner from Tempus Fugit, made from flowers hand-picked in the French Riviera (ooh la la!). It pulls off the great trick of being floral but not perfume-y, sweet but not sticky. It's also less sweet than Creme de Violette (the most widely available violet liqueur), with a more intense violet flavor (flower power!). tip of the tongue *Blue Moon: Combine 2 oz dry gin, 1/2 oz Liqueur de Violettes, 1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1/4 oz simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice. Shake until very cold and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. ingredients 22% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Mantuano Venezuela 70% Dark Chocolate Bar

    Dandelion Chocolate

Mantuano Venezuela 70% Dark Chocolate Bar - Who'd argue that chocolate can't be the face of girl power? The Mantuano Venezuela 70% Dark Chocolate Bar has plenty of it. Its beans come from a female-run co-op in the tropical hills of the Caribbean coast of Venezuela, who have roasted them at a higher temperature for a shorter time, kind of like coffee roasting. Todd and Cam of Dandelion Chocolate were destined for this work. From trying to grow cacao beans in their own apartment to roasting fresh beans in their little oven, it was only a matter of time until these two former tech-industry leaders would abandon computers for cacao. Now, in their small bean-to-bar workshop in the Mission area of San Francisco, they roast, crack, sort, winnow, grind, conch and temper small batches of single-origin beans and then mold and package each bar by hand. tip of the tongue We like to use this chocolate in one of our favorite simple desserts: Toast baguette slices, then immediately top with slivers of chopped chocolate so it begins to melt. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and serve. ingredients Cocoa beans and cane sugar. Comes in a 2 oz bar.

  • Raspberry Marshmallows

    Three Tarts

  • Spiced Candied Pecans

    Treat Bake Shop

Spiced Candied Pecans - You expect to be hit with a nostalgic taste of those fresh, hot roasted pecans you'd get as a treat in the city around Christmastime, but what you get is so much better. Something about whatever maker Sarah Marx Feldner sprinkles on these pecans (is it magic?) makes your eyes pop: they're salty up front, but then the flavor grows into a slow-burning, cinnamon-y heat, all without overwhelming a sweet pecan-pie base that we're totally crazy for. Tip of the Tongue There's no better wintertime gift – they warm you up with no heat required, and would make a great stocking stuffer or a crowd-pleasing holiday party snack too! Ingredients Pecans, sugar, salt, spices. Sold in a 7 oz jar.

  • Sugar Wash Moonshine

    Dutch's Spirits

Sugar Wash Moonshine - This "moonshine" is technically a white rum, so it's sweet and clean with a delicious hint of vanilla. Sugar Wash deserves the more storied name, though, because it's made on Harvest Homestead Farm in New York, where federal agents once discovered a one-of-a-kind, illegal, underground distillery run by legendary mobster Dutch Schultz. Sugar Wash is inspired by Dutch's moonshine made on the farm during Prohibition. Today, they (legally) distill pure Demerara sugar in traditional pot stills. tip of the tongue Try it in a Moonshine Mule, recipe courtesy of the distiller: Combine 2 oz Sugar Wash, 3/4 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup, 3 dashes of Angostura bitters, 1 tsp of chopped fresh ginger and 4-5 mint leaves in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice. Shake until very cold and strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice. Top with club soda and garnish with a mint leaf. ingredients Distilled from 100% Demerara sugar; 40% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Ron del Barrilito Three Star

    Edmundo B. Fernandez Inc.

Ron del Barrilito Three Star - There’s a time to mix, and a time to sip. This rum is for sipping. Nutty and earthy with a hint of warm spices, Ron del Barrilito is for fans of aged brandies and whiskeys. We really had no idea rum could taste so rich and complex, yet balanced. This has become our go-to gift for impressing fancy friends (no need for them to know it's such a good deal). The Fernandez family takes freshly distilled white rum and processes it the same way the French do with cognac, using an antique system brought to the U.S. over 100 years ago. It’s a labor of love, and they only produce around 9,000 cases each year (for comparison: one well-known producer also based in Puerto Rico makes about 20 million cases a year). For the Geeks: Instead of filtering, the rum is slowly moved through a series of oak tanks, where the sediment naturally sinks to the bottom. Then, it rests in wine barrels for 6 to 10 years until the family is ready to blend it into the perfect mix for bottling. tip of the tongue Daiquiri have gotten a bad rap, but this classic version is one of our favorite drinks ever. Combine 2 oz Ron del Barrilito, 1 oz simple syrup and 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice. Shake until very cold and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. ingredients 43% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.
