  • Cocoa & Sea Salt Halva Spread

    Brooklyn Sesame

Cocoa & Sea Salt Halva Spread - We're big fans of chocolate-covered anything, but especially halva: smooth, sweet chocolate coating crumbly, nutty candy. . . yum! Turns out, it's even tastier in spread form. And we can't believe that cocoa powder tastes so rich and chocolatey! Just a pinch of sea salt makes all the flavors pop and keeps you wanting more, more, more. This really blew our minds when we first tasted it at the Brooklyn Flea. Brooklyn Sesame has completely re-imagined the traditional Mediterranean candy known as halva – crumbly slabs of crystalized sesame puree and sugar – by magically transforming it into a spread! Sesame sweets are first hand-ground then sweetened with pure honey (instead of sugar) and folded with nutty mix-ins. You have to halva it. (Ha!) Tip of the Tongue Take one taste from the jar and you just might be eating the rest of it with a spoon. If you manage to show a little more restraint, try it with fresh strawberries, graham crackers or spread it on slices of toasted baguette.

  • Almond Ginger Cherry Shortbread Bites

    Carla Hall Petite Cookies

Almond Ginger Cherry Shortbread Bites - Crunchy cookies versus chewy cookies: the great divide. But why compromise? It's hard to believe that these micro-cookies can contain the best of both worlds, but maybe that's why Carla Hall calls it "Alchemy" – each wee cube of buttery almond shortbread is studded with spicy-sweet caramelized ginger and tart dried cherry, making them at once crunchy and chewy. Not to mention scrumptious. While competing on Bravo's "Top Chef," Carla Hall spread her infectious philosophy: cook with love. Now, her motto has found its way to baking cookies. Spreading the love is encouraged, as these adorable treats are bite-sized and made for sharing. Each batch is rolled by hand using the freshest seasonal ingredients, and Carla's able to channel her Southern background along with her classic French training. Now, the only question is whether you'll actually share before devouring the whole lovely package! Tip of the Tongue Buy a variety of Alchemy cookie flavors and set them out in an array of pretty bowls for the perfect party munchies!

  • Apple Mint Vermouth

    Uncouth Vermouth

Apple Mint Vermouth - Don't expect a prim and proper drink – this is vermouth gone wild! Dry and sippable, the cool, minty finish is totally refreshing (the apple refers to the type of wild mint, by the way, so no fruit here!). Maker Bianca Miraglia starts with Long Island wines from Red Hook Winery, then infuses them with herbs, mostly foraged by her or grown in her mother's garden. Her vermouth gets its bitterness from mugwort, a relative of wormwood, the traditional ingredient for making vermouth, well, bitter. Once the wine is infused, Bianca strains the herbs, rather than filtering (hence the cloudiness), then adds brandy (also made from Long Island grapes) to fortify the wine to 18% alcohol. Bianca makes her vermouth in tiny batches, so it's not always available. Buy a bottle (or two!) while you can. tip of the tongue Bianca recommends finishing a bottle within three or four weeks for peak freshness. We like to serve it chilled with a lemon twist before dinner.

  • Glorious Gin

    Breuckelen Distilling

Glorious Gin - Glory, glory, hallelujah! This gin is just as tasty with tonic as it is in a strong cocktail. While all gins must contain juniper, a distiller can add any other botanicals they want to craft their own unique flavor. Most distillers keep the recipe secret, but our neighbors at Breuckelen Distilling proudly revealed their secrets – lemon, rosemary, ginger and grapefruit. Unlike many gins that are basically infused vodkas, Breuckelen's gin is distilled from wheat grown in upstate New York, so the base is really more like a white whiskey. In fact, they barrel-age the same wheat spirit to make their 77 Whiskey. tip of the tongue The warm ginger note makes it just right paired with Morris Kitchen's ginger syrup. For a deliciously easy cocktail, combine 2 oz gin, 1 oz syrup and 1/2 oz lemon juice over ice and stir until cold, then top with a little seltzer. Did you know? Gin can be infused with a wide variety of botanicals, but it MUST contain juniper berries, which are responsible for that distinct, piney, gin-y flavor. ingredients Distilled from 100% wheat grown in upstate New York; 45% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Iris Espresso

    Brooklyn Roasting Company

Iris Espresso - Iris espresso is a sweet, spicy, extremely well-balanced blend of three distinctive beans – Peru, Sumatra, and Ethiopian Sidamo – roasted together in small batches. This coffee is soft and creamy, with notes of maple sugar, plum, cocoa and spice. No need to reserve this only for espresso – it's a great blend for drip or an aeropress. Brooklyn Roasting Company is right around the corner from us in DUMBO, Brooklyn – and worth the trip. They roast an awesome bean and make a truly perfect cup of coffee. They say they're not coffee snobs, just dedicated coffee lovers who only settle for the best. tip of the tongue Pro Tip: There's no such thing as an espresso bean. Espresso refers to coffee made in a particular way. When beans are labeled espresso, it just means that the roaster recommends using those beans to make espresso. Another fun fact: Espresso is stronger than coffee by volume, but a shot of espresso has much less caffeine than a small (8 oz.) cup of coffee.

  • Peanut Brittle Squares

    Newfangled Confections

Peanut Brittle Squares - These adorable, bite-size squares are made with crunchy peanut butter, delivering maximum peanutty flavor and a crunchy, flaky texture that reminds us of one of our favorite junky candy bars (nobody's gonna lay a finger on . . . our peanut frittle!), but with a way shorter ingredient list. Confectioner Carrie Abbott started Newfangled Confections with a single idea: retro candy as a gift. That’s how her genius combinations of sugar and peanut became Frittle – the tender, buttery bite of fudge + the salty-sweet snap of brittle. And, she packs them up in adorable kraft paper boxes, so no wrapping paper necessary. tip of the tongue Peanut brittle makes for a sweet gift, but why not keep a box for yourself? Lift the recycled kraft paper lid and pop a piece of the candy that earned Indiana Artisan distinction in its first year. ingredients Peanut butter, sugar, corn syrup, salt. Comes in a 4 oz box. NOTE: Made in a facility that also processes coconut and sesame seeds.

  • McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey

    Clear Creek Distillery

McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey - If Portland were in Scotland (dream big, people), this whiskey would be a single malt Scotch, and would certainly turn some heads. This rich, smoky, smooth spirit is a Single Malt Whiskey made in the smoky Islay Scotch tradition. To pull off this trick, Clear Creek brings in peat smoke-dried, malted barley from Scotland, and local brewery Widmer Brothers ferments it until it’s ready to distill. Then, they age it in a combination of used sherry casks and new local oak casks. This whiskey isn't just defined by the peat, though. The smoke is balanced by the creamy flavor of malted barley, and a hint of caramel sweetness from three years in new Oregon oak. This bottle has won just about every award and accolade out there. Just one taste, and you'll know why. tip of the tongue This is one of the rarest spirits we carry – we can only get a couple of bottles a year – so when you see it’s available, don’t hesitate! ingredients 42.5% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Maya Mountain Belize 70% Dark Chocolate Bar

    Dandelion Chocolate

Maya Mountain Belize 70% Dark Chocolate Bar - Todd and Cam of Dandelion Chocolate were destined for this work. From trying to grow cacao beans in their own apartment to roasting fresh beans in their little oven, it was only a matter of time until these two former tech-industry leaders would abandon computers for cacao. Now, in their small bean-to-bar workshop in the Mission area of San Francisco, they roast, crack, sort, winnow, grind, conch and temper small batches of single-origin beans and then mold and package each bar by hand. Maya Mountain Cacao ferments and dries beans purchased from over 200 small farmers in Southern Belize. This bar greets you with graceful hints of green grape, then blooms into a honeyed pineapple sweetness. It ends on a high note with a tangy kick. With all this flavor, it's crazy to think just cocoa beans and cane sugar went into it. Tip of the Tongue This bar would make killer gourmet s'mores: Top one graham cracker with squares of the bar and a Three Tarts Raspberry Marshmallow . Toast in a toaster oven or under a broiler (watch carefully!) until the marshmallow is browned and the chocolate melty. Top with a second graham cracker and dig in! ingredients Cocoa beans and cane sugar. Comes in a 2 oz bar.

  • Tanzania Kiboko Peaberry

    Ozo Coffee Co.

Tanzania Kiboko Peaberry - We like our coffee complex, but never complicated. This bright, unique coffee is a spot-on example of what makes Tanzania such an exciting source. OZO brings these beans to a light-medium roast, emphasizing their floral aroma and flavors of tropical fruit and citrus. And, what's a peaberry, anyway? Coffee usually grows as a double seed, with two beans in the center of each coffee cherry. About 5% of the time, only one small seed forms – the peaberry. In high-quality coffees, it's often sweeter and more flavorful than typical beans. tip of tongue What's the best way to keep fresh coffee fresh? While the debate about freezing still rages on, we like to keep things simple. Heat, light and oxygen are the enemies. Just store beans tightly wrapped in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. ingredients Light-medium roast; washed and sun dried; grown at 1,500-2,000 meters above sea level. Whole beans; comes in a 16 oz bag.

  • Stillhouse Bourbon Whiskey

    Van Brunt Stillhouse

Stillhouse Bourbon Whiskey - Made from 65% organic corn from upstate New York farms, along with a good amount of wheat, this is a fairly dry bourbon with hints of nuts and maple syrup. This is a terrific taste of the Brooklyn indie spirits movement. O ur neighbors at Van Brunt Stillhouse make tiny batches of whiskey by hand. Because of their small size and large love of experimentation, they release different styles throughout the year. Each run is extremely limited, so we might not have this in stock for long! tip of the tongue A great gift for Brooklyn fans! (Go Nets!) ingredients Comes in a 375mL bottle.

  • Straight Rye Whiskey

Straight Rye Whiskey - 100% rye. 100 proof. Aged for 10 years in New American oak barrels. Oh yeah, WhistlePig is a seriously strong, seriously good rye. It's full-bodied with great hints of Christmas spice wrapped around a black pepper center. The long aging tames some of the heat and brings along the vanilla and a touch of dark chocolate. It's got a pretty good story, too: Dave Pickerell, longtime Master Distiller for Maker’s Mark, believed that rye was going to be the next big thing, so he went on a quest to find the best rye possible. He fell in love with an unusual 100% rye (rumor has it, it was made by our neighbors to the North, but he's not telling). He teamed up with WhistlePig founder Raj Bhakta, who bought a 200-year-old working dairy farm in Shoreham where they began hand-bottling the whiskey. Today, they've built a distillery, are growing their own organic rye and are working towards distilling and aging their own rye whiskey. Until then, we'll just have to settle for drinking this powerfully delicious spirit of top-secret origin that has garnered rave reviews since it hit the market. How's that for American pluck? tip of the tongue While whiskey at this price is usually too precious to mix, we love this rye splashed into warm apple cider for a restorative winter warmer. ingredients Distilled from 100% rye; 50% alcohol by volume; comes in a 750ml bottle.

  • Upala 70% Dark Chocolate Bar

    Potomac Chocolate

Upala 70% Dark Chocolate Bar - Washington, DC is a political city, rife with strong opinions. So beltway-based bean-to-bar chocolatier Ben Rasmussen fits right in, even though the only office he holds is in a small chocolate workshop. He lobbies hard for chocolate made from cacao beans whose unique flavors have been carefully coaxed out and unadulterated by anything other than sugar. His bars are as intense as any DC denizen, perfect for those who dwell on the dark side of chocolate. Potomac Chocolate’s first bar, this dark chocolate is made using cacao from the Upala district of Costa Rica. Rasmussen deems it rich and earthy, with notes of raspberry and caramel. This daring combo's got our vote. Tip of the Tongue To bring out the sweetness and downplay the bitter notes of this dark chocolate, pair with any spicy snack. Peppers and chilies actually numb your tongue, giving more subtle tastebuds a chance. Ingredients Cocoa beans, sugar. Comes in a 1.76 oz bar.
