4 Tips for Planning a Wedding Shower from Darcy Miller

by loverly on

We sat down with Darcy Miller, Celebrations Expert and Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine, to get her advice on how to throw a personalized, one-of-a-kind wedding shower. Darcy's 25 years of experience as an editor and on-trend celebration specialist makes her a can't miss Lover.ly Featured Expert. Read on for Darcy's best shower tips and get the inside scoop on the music-inspired shower she threw for MS Weddings special projects editor Anthony Luscia.

1. Put the couple's interests front and center. It's more important to stay true to what the couple likes than to do something out-of-the-ordinary or outrageous. When you take the time to plan and personalize an event that truly fits the couple, it becomes so much more memorable.
2. Get playful and go interactive! Traditional shower games are out! Plan an activity the couple and guests are sure to love -- whether it's a wine tasting, cooking classes, or a spa day. Interactive showers bring guests together and help them get to know each other in a fun and playful environment. For Anthony's shower, the MS Weddings team celebrated the couple's love for Broadway at Pop Star Parties in Manhattan where we recorded two songs for the couple. Check with your local recording studio or karaoke bar to do this in your area.
3. Tell their love story through song. Everyone has a song. Even if you aren't planning a music-themed party, you can be inspired by a tune. I like to bring music to the event by having guests and family get personal and rewrite song lyrics to tell the couple's love story. I also love the idea of throwing a karaoke party at home, or at a karaoke bar.
4. Use props to play up the humor. Provide guests with comical and spirited accessories (think sunglasses and glitter microphones like these from Oriental Trading) that will add to the excitement. It is a party after all!
